Chiropractic care for pregnant moms

During pregnancy, a mother's body goes through a variety of changes. Most notably, postural changes can create a major structural shift in the lower back and pelvis. It is common for pregnant mothers to experience lower back pain and sciatica due to these shifts. Changes in the mother's center of gravity can also lead to rounded shoulders and Anterior Head Syndrome. Both Dr. Sam and Dr. Mike are certified in the Webster Technique, which is "a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neuro- biomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved."  This improves alignment of the sacral and pelvic joints and releases tension in the ligaments of the pelvis and uterus. A specially designed table and pillows are used to keep mom and baby in the most comfortable and safe positions during care. Women who receive chiropractic care during pregnancy report shorter labor times and easier deliveries due to proper pelvic structure.

Often, the first onset of spinal shifting occurs in a child's spine during the birthing process. Even the most natural birthing methods can cause irritation to a baby's delicate spine and developing nervous system. When a newborn's spine has shifted, resulting secondary conditions can include colic, ear infections, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbance, and allergic reactions.

As a newborn grows into childhood, they will fall down hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Between learning to walk, playing, and participating in sports, a child's spine can take quite a thumping. Individually, these falls can be minor and insignificant. Cumulatively, however, they can lead to the origination of minor structural shifts of the spine. If neglected, these shifts taking place during this period of rapid growth and development, can lead to more significant issues later in life. Dr. Mike and Dr. Sam are members of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
